Social Security: What Every Woman Should Know

For any woman nearing retirement age, deciding which elections to make for Social Security benefits can be a daunting task. We came across a helpful publication called "Social Security: What Every Woman Should Know". (http://www.ssa.gov/pubs/EN-05-10127.pdf). Your financial planner can also be a great resource when making these important decisions.  Of course, we are willing to help if you have questions about the legal aspects of your decision.

Real Estate Scam Alert

A company is sending out notices offering to get copies of legal documents for people for $83 to $87 each. They are targeting anyone who has filed any type of document at the Seneca County Recorder's Office recently; including deeds, mortgages, leases, etc.

If you recently filed a deed, mortgage or other document at the Recorder's Office, you probably already have a copy and don't need another one. If you need one and don't have it, you can go to the Recorder's Office yourself - they only charge $1 (not $87!). If you receive a notice and you're not sure what to do, call us and we'll look into it. A copy of one of the notices is below.

The long-term-insurance industry now is shrinking, premiums are soaring and there is no fix in sight.
...
[I]nsurers underestimated how fast medical costs would rise, and how many seniors would actually use the benefits.
...
Many once-prominent sellers of long-term-care insurance are in full retreat.  Five of the

Meicare and the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare)

Many thanks to Maria Browne at Elmwood at the Shawhan for inviting Jane and me to present a program at Elmwood to discuss the impact of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act ("ACA" or “Obamacare”) on Medicare benefits for seniors.  The ACA has, of course, been in the news and will be more so as 2014 approaches and several large components of the ACA are to be implemented.

What we found in our research is that the ACA's impact on Medicare can be seen at two levels.  On the first level, Medicare benefits

Nursing Home Checklist

Many of our clients have a family member or friend who may be in need of nursing home care.  Selecting the right facility is an important decision.  The official website for Medicare has a checklist that can be very helpful to make the selection process easier.  The checklist can be found at   http://www.medicare.gov/nursing/checklist.asp?PrinterFriendly=true .
